Historic trails of the Blenio Valley

Four routes will take you to discover the historical and cultural gems of the Blenio Valley. In addition to the wonderful natural heritage, you will be able to observe numerous artistic and architectural testimonies such as churches, chapels, frescoes, palaces and bridges.

Alpe Gorda Astronomical Observatory

Take part in one of the astronomical events organised by the Astrocalina Astronomical Association in the Gorda Mountains. You will have the opportunity to spend evenings observing the stars, the moon, Saturn and other deep-sky objects visible during the summer season.

The Blenio Ethnographic Museum and Ca da Rivöi

The Blenio Valley Historical and Ethnographic Museum is located in Lottigna, in a splendid 16th century building. On the facade you can admire frescoes with the coats of arms of the Landfogti of Uri, Schwyz and Nidwalden who governed the Blenio territory between 1501 and 1598. Inside the museum you will find further frescoes with coats of arms of the families of the valley, objects related to agriculture, sacred art and winemaking.

The small radio and photography museum of Campo Blenio

In this small museum in Campo Blenio, you will have the opportunity to observe about a hundred radios, with models dating back to the beginning of the last century, and about eighty cameras from the end of the 19th century to the digital age.

The ruins of the Serravalle Castle

Take a step back in time by walking among the ruins of Serravalle Castle, the third most historically important castle in Canton Ticino. Its first written mention dates back to 1162 when the Lord of Blenio Alcherio da Torre, appointed Imperial Avogard of the Valley by Frederick Barbarossa, was in control of it.

The Church of San Carlo di Negrentino

The church of Negrentino, also known as San Carlo, is of enchanting Romanesque architectural beauty. Situated in a unique and isolated location, it is accessible just a few steps from Leontica by crossing a small suspension bridge. Inside the church, you can admire several frescoes, one of which dates back to the mid 11th century (1050).

The Round House and Donetta Archive Foundation

The Casa Rotonda (Round House), today home to the Donetta Archive, is located in Corzoneso. Between 1901 and 1932 it was the home of the photographer Roberto Donetta, who spent part of his life immortalising scenes of everyday life in the Blenio Valley. Today, the building is managed by the Donetta Foundation and its purpose is to preserve and promote Roberto Donetta's "legacy" and to organise cultural events focusing on photography.
